On 13 October 2021, AMC Consultants hosted a Sundowner event at the Melbourne Hotel in Perth.

The event was very successful with 75 attendees enjoying a keynote presentation by AMC Principal Consultant, Peter Fisher followed by a stimulating discussion featuring a panel of industry experts.

The main points raised in the discussion were: 

  • The activity in the WA mining sector is evidenced by 70 IPOs in 2021 up to October.
  • The level of M&A activity is increasing with some hostile takeovers emerging.
  • Skills shortages.
  • Measures being taken to deliver zero emissions by 2050.
  • Some optimism expressed regarding carbon reduction because of rapid technological development and intense industry focus.

Another main area of discussion were the challenges in developing new projects, which include:

  • Raising the initial money.
  • Managing a successful feasibility study and allocating sufficient time and money to risk management during the study phases.
  • Boards allowing for upside potential in the mineral resource.
  • Starting the approvals process early enough and allowing for sufficient funds for that process.
  • Lending institutions trending towards more rigorous environmental standards than those traditionally required in WA.
  • Sufficient mine closure planning, and financial allowances early in the life-of-mine planning process.

    Peter has more than 35 years of experience ranging from Board/management and production roles in mining project development/feasibility, banking/finance, due diligence, and commercial studies for major mining companies. This  has been gained from operations and projects in Australia, USA, China, UK, South Africa, Brazil and Mozambique.  Commercial and contractual negotiations with Joint Ventures, government, financiers and customers are his core expertise.  For the past four years he was sole Director of a private 60% owner (40% Japanese/Korean steelmakers) of a major metallurgical/thermal coal project.  He led the development of LOM mine strategy, evaluation of new metallurgical and thermal product specifications, financial analysis and offtake/funding proposals with coal users.
