After a four year hiatus, on Thursday, June 29, The Melbourne Mining Club Dinner took place at the presitgious Guildhall in London. Attended by more than 500 mining industry professionals and media,  this is one of the most important events in the mining industry calendar and for AMC Consultants, a proud sponsor of the club and the dinner.


AMC was well represented with two members of the executive team travelling to London exclusively for this event as well as two members of its management team. This AMC delegation consisted of CEO Patrick Smith, Nick Szebor, Johann van Wijk, Dominic Claridge, Mark Chesher, and Johnny Mercer-Royce.

Patrick Smith

Managing Director and CEO 

  • Short bio

    Patrick's expertise is in the design and operation of open-pit and underground mines, including mine design, scheduling and budgeting, equipment selection and specification, ore reserve estimation, technical studies, and operations management. He has broad expertise in gold, nickel, and mineral sands operations in both planning and management roles.

Nicholas Szebor

Principal Geologist

  • Short bio

    Nick has 14 years of experience within the mineral industry working in roles including consultancy and production. His experience covers a range of commodities, geological settings, exploration and production environments, including underground and open-pit operations. This experience has been obtained across the mining lifecycle from early-stage exploration to production and mine closure. Nick has carried out mineral resource estimates to international reporting codes including JORC, CIM (NI 43-101), and SAMREC.

Dominic Claridge

Principal Mining Engineer

  • Short bio

    Dominic has more than 30 years of experience in operations, project management, and consulting in precious and base-metal mining across Australia, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Dominic has considerable experience in underground and open-pit mining operations, having worked for many years on mine sites and then progressing to project management and C-suite executive. His experience working with a mix of junior and mid-tier mining companies has provided him with a multitude of skills in relation to all aspects of project development studies across a broad range of commodities.

Mark Chesher

Executive Lead - Business Development / Principal Mining Engineer

  • Short bio

    Mark's technical expertise lies in the design and operation of open pit mines. He has broad experience in mining operations in both planning and management roles over a period of 18 years.


    In these roles, he was responsible for ore reserve reporting, equipment selection and specification, pit design, scheduling and budgeting and operations management. During 20 years as a consultant with AMC, Mark has managed feasibility studies in Australia, Mozambique, Finland, Russia and Central African Republic for gold, platinum, base metals, uranium, magnetite, phosphate and mineral sands projects.

Johnny Mercer-Royce

Principal Mining Engineer

  • Short bio

    Johnny has more than ten years’ experience as a mining engineer and a financial  analyst. This includes operational experience in underground gold mining as well as open-pit mineral sands deposits. This operational experience is complemented by financial and market analysis for a variety of projects and commodities. At AMC Johnny has conducted multiple benchmarking and operational improvement projects for both open-pit and underground gold and base metal operations.

Hugh Shedden

Senior Mining Engineer


  • Short bio

    Hugh is a mining engineer with more than 10 years of experience in the mining industry. His experience across the mining  cycle includes time as an underground operator, drill-and-blast engineering, ventilation engineering, mine scheduling, mine planning, and underground management. 


    Points of interest during his career have been continuous improvement projects across all engineering facets, remnant mining, crown pillar extraction, underground construction, life-of-mine ventilation design, dewatering, contract negotiation, surface raisebore drilling, maiden stope firings, and mine closure.  



    Hugh has worked at six mines across four operations in Western Australia, collectively producing gold, copper, and nickel, and employing a variety of mining methods. 

Johann van Wijk

General Manager, Adelaide / Principal Geotechnical Engineer

  • Short bio

    Johann commenced his career as a mining engineer in underground mining approximately 30 years ago. He has held a variety of production, mine planning, technical and management roles through his career and has specific expertise in project management, geotechnical engineering, rock mechanics, risk management, and management of technical teams, in underground and surface mines. Johann has experience in a variety of mining methods and commodities. His geotechnical expertise includes the design, management and review of geotechnical aspects related to shafts, drifts, stopes, longwalls, bord and pillar mining, partial pillar extraction and surface mining excavations.
