Keynote Presentation 6: The future of professional practice in mine geology - lessons from the Space Beagle'

In this presentation, Ian Lipton will discuss the future of the professional practice of mine geology through the prism of key themes drawn from The Voyage of the Space Beagle, a pulp fiction science fiction novel written by A E van Vogt more than half a century ago. He will argue that cross-disciplinary thinking and collaboration will be the great drivers of change and business improvement in the mining industry. Remain relevant in the age of robots and automation, mine geologists must embrace the opportunity to become cross-disciplinary leaders and make full use of their knowledge of the geological characteristics of their deposits and how individual deposits respond to various mining and processing options. They must also become more successful at communicating the value in detailed geological and geometallurgical investigation and how this contributes to greater profitability.
